Atmospheric Effects of the Kuroshio Large Meander during 2004–05*

چکیده
In the summer of 2004, the Kuroshio took a large meander path south of Japan for the first time since 1991, and this large meander event persisted until the next summer. Satellite observations and numerical model simulations are used to study the effect of this large meander event on the atmosphere. The large meander leaves a cool water pool between the Kuroshio and Japanese coast. Sea surface temperature (SST) in the cool water pool is about 28–38C colder than the surroundings during winter and spring, whereas the SST signature substantially weakens in summer. A local reduction of wind speed is found over the cool water pool, and the positive SST–wind speed correlation is indicative of ocean forcing of the atmosphere. Cloud liquid water (CLW) content and precipitation also decrease over the cool SST pool. A regional atmospheric model successfully simulates atmospheric response to the Kuroshio large meander. The model experiments suggest that the reduced surface wind speed and precipitation are due to the large meander-induced SST cooling. Analysis of the surface perturbation momentum budgets shows the importance of the pressure adjustment mechanism in surface wind response to the cold SST anomalies.

Measuring the Impact of Observations on the Predictability of the Kuroshio Extension in a Shallow-Water Model
In this paper, sequential importance sampling is used to assess the impact of observations on an ensemble prediction for the decadal path transitions of the Kuroshio Extension. This particle-filtering approach gives access to the probability density of the state vector, which allows the predictive power—an entropy-based measure—of the ensemble prediction to be determined. The proposed setup mak...
متن کاملCovariations of Sea Surface Temperature and Wind over the Kuroshio and Its Extension: Evidence for Ocean-to-Atmosphere Feedback*
Satellite microwave measurements are analyzed, revealing robust covariability in sea surface temperature (SST) and wind speed over the Kuroshio Extension (KE) east of Japan. Ocean hydrodynamic instabilities cause the KE to meander and result in large SST variations. Increased (reduced) wind speeds are found to be associated with warm (cold) SST anomalies. This positive SST–wind correlation in K...

The atmospheric response to the spring Kuroshio Front over the East China Sea is investigated using a suite of high-resolution satellite data and a regional atmospheric model. The atmospheric response appears to extend beyond the marine atmospheric boundary layer, with frequent occurrence of cumulus convection. In spring, Quick Scatterometer (QuikSCAT) wind speed shows a clear effect of sea sur...

10 Observational analyses reveal that variations in sea surface temperatures (SST) in the 11 Kuroshio-Oyashio extension (KOE) region of the North Pacific are associated with two dis12 tinct and robust patterns of atmospheric variability: 1) a pattern that peaks in amplitude 13 approximately 2 3 weeks prior to large KOE SST anomalies, and is consistent with atmo14 spheric forcing of the SST fiel...
متن کاملA New Method for Tracking Ocean Dynamics
T he Kuroshio Current transports large amounts of warm and salty water from the tropics northward, whereas the Oyashio Current transports cold and fresh water from the Bering Sea and the Sea of Okhotsk southward. Where they meet in the western North Pacific, they form the Kuroshio Extension and the Oyashio Front, a region of very complicated currents and eddies. Large decadal variations that st...
